Update Fall 2009 Recruitment Travel COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog
Update Fall 2009 Recruitment Travel COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Each fall representatives of SIPA attend various events so that prospective students can gather more information about our programs. Generally each event is attended by a staff member from the Office of Admissions and in some cases current students and/or alumni will attend. There are two types of events we typically participate in. First, we attend recruitment fairs. Two associations that sponsor recruitment fairs are APSIA and idealist.org. APSIA stands for the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs. Registration for APSIA fairs is required but there is no fee to attend. You can register by visiting the APSIA site. idealist.org states their mission as: Idealist is a project of Action Without Borders, a nonprofit organization founded in 1995 with offices in the United States and Argentina. Idealist is an interactive site where people and organizations can exchange resources and ideas, locate opportunities and supporters, and take steps toward building a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives. Each year idealist.org sponsors graduate school fairs and SIPA will be attending some of their fairs this fall. Registration for these fairs is also free. Second, SIPA travels with other policy schools to visit college and university campuses. We are working on a registration page for our college/university visits and expect that it will be available in early September. No fees are charged for attending our college/university visits. While our travel schedule still is a work in progress, I wanted to go ahead and post it to provide advanced notice on the areas we are likely to visit in the next few months. Events that are listed in black text have been finalized and if a time or location is listed in red text we are still working on the final details. You can access the proposed travel schedule by visiting our recruiting schedule page. Please also note that SIPA does host information sessions each Monday at 6:00 P.M. and each Friday at Noon. Registration is required and in some cases (i.e. holidays) the sessions may be subject to cancellation so please register as far ahead as possible. To register simply send an email to sipa_admission@columbia.edu.

Professional Activities And Social Work - 1562 Words
1. What professional activities have I engaged in during the week? (Donââ¬â¢t just list your activities. There should be some discussion of them.) Since the first day of field placement I have engaged in several professional activities, which made me further realize that a professional career in social work is the right path for me. On my very first day I was exposed to the professional activities of social work, but to my surprise I went on my first hospital visit with the Lead Care Coordinator. I was very nervous because it was first professional encounter as well as my first day as an internship. Once we arrived at the hospital I was not as nervous because the Lead Care Coordinator thoroughly explained to me the procedures that Social workers do while at the hospital. After gathered all the necessary paper work, we began making visits to all the patientsââ¬â¢ rooms in order to offer our services. We were able to enroll two patients into our program, while others declined. After leaving the hospital the Lead Care Coordinator questioned my experience and I was able to tell her that it was scary, yet a great learning opportu nity. After the first day, I was able to gain even more exposure as I went to visit Maude Whatleyââ¬â¢s Health Clinic in order to schedule appointments for patients, offer our services to eligible clients, and advocate for services that our patients need. College Pressures And Eric Greiten s The Heart And The Fist
In todayââ¬â¢s society, there is a stigma that one needs a college education to be successful. Due to these overwhelming societal pressures, college students encounter numerous challenges. Two authors who explore these challenges are William Zinsser in his article ââ¬Å"College Pressuresâ⬠and Eric Greiten in his book ââ¬Å"The Heart and the Fistâ⬠. Both Zinsser and Greitens consider the everyday struggles that college students face. While discussing the same topics, the authors use different writing styles and techniques to illustrate the same idea. To begin with, Greitens harnesses his personal experience to outline the pressures he faced during his study abroad trip in China. Specifically, he focuses on the difficulties relating to the actual journey as well as the college workload. Greitensââ¬â¢ writing style captivates the reader. For example, Greitens uses the ââ¬Å"Kung Fuââ¬â¢ story to explain a simple thought. While in his Kung Fu class, the students w ere partaking in different tests that demonstrated each studentââ¬â¢s honor. At first, Greitens had hesitations because of his fear of failure. However, he was cautioned by his peers that avoiding the test would indubitably result in social shunning by his mentors. Ultimately, Greitens accepted his fate and the sharp sword pierced his neck, merely leaving behind a small red mark. Because of his willingness to attempt, Greitens passed the test. Combing his own personal memoir and second person narratives, Greitens entices the reader

Essay on A Reflection on the Meaning of Life from Three...
What is the most asked philosophical question? It seems to me that the answer is: what is the meaning of life? Everywhere in the world, one can find the evidence that finding a meaning in life is very important for people. Humanity appears to be preoccupied with this question since the very dawn of civilization. What do Socrates, Baruch De Spinoza and Simone De Beauvoir have in common? Yes, their names all have an ââ¬ËSââ¬â¢ in it. But there is something else: They are all individuals who have been trying to find the meaning of life. In this essay I will reflect on the meaning of life as presented by these three philosophers. Let me first explain why I have chosen this approach. The meaning of life has been an interest to me for a longâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The ultimate goal for the human being is to break out of this circle. The only way to do so is by not having any desires anymore. The fact you actually desire to have no desires anymore makes this pursuit a very difficult one. In the Christian tradition, however, the general teaching is that human beings have only one life. That one life decides whether we will enter heaven or hell. Of course, many people today do not call themselves Christians anymore, but I still think that a great deal of our underlying premises about the meaning of life is still based on the religious doctrines. Of our three philosophers, I think Simone De Beauvoir is the only one of whom it can be said that she was part of the Christian cultural tradition. The remarkable thing about De Beauvoir is that she was a devout Catholic in her early childhood who intended to become a nun. However, at the age of 14 she changed her attitude radically and became an atheist for the rest of her life. I wonder whether this had anything to do with the fact that she witnessed the First World War as a child. Maybe she concluded that God could not be present in such evil, just like many Jews did after the Holocaust. Baruch De Spinoza lived in the Protestant Netherlands of the 17th century, but he came from the Jewish tradition himself. Like Beauvoir, Spinoza left the religious community he originated from. He was even expelled because his views were considered too radical.Show MoreRelatedTransformational Learning Essay1027 Words à |à 5 Pagesquestions arise from these observations. Bloomberg News vs. Agence France-Presse Free Essays
Comparing Bloomberg News and Agence France-Presseââ¬â¢s presentation of a story regarding the recent win of Barrack Obama against Hilary Clinton in the Wisconsin and Hawaii primaries, there are some similarities and differences that can be seen. Both stories from Bloomberg and AFP provide the necessary information that answers the five Ws of a news report.à AFP and Bloomberg wrote about Barrack Obama, Hilary Clinton, and John McCain, the three presidential hopefuls, and the results of the recently concluded primaries in the states of Wisconsin and Hawaii. We will write a custom essay sample on Bloomberg News vs. Agence France-Presse or any similar topic only for you Order Now Both stories follow the inverted pyramid style wherein the most important part of the news can be found at the beginning.à The stories are easy to read and well written. There is however, a marked difference in the use of descriptive language.à For instance, Bloomberg used ââ¬Å"rivalâ⬠to refer to Mrs. Clinton, while AFP used ââ¬Å"bitter rivalâ⬠to describe Mrs. Clinton.à Reading the AFP story, one would gleam an emotion from the story, while the Bloomberg report is simply matter-of-fact. Reading the AFP report is like hearing somebody doing an eloquent speech.à On the other hand, reading the Bloomberg report is like listening to a well-prepared board presentation. Probably, the eloquence that can be associated with the AFP report is influenced by the more expressive nature of the French people as a whole.à In the case of the very business-like Bloomberg report, one can reasonably say that the writing is influenced by the hurried world that New Yorkers have.à à Another instance where the two stories vary is in the angle theyââ¬â¢ve taken. Early in the story, AFP talks about McCainââ¬â¢s preemptive strike against Obama.à The same detail was placed under a separate subheading in the Bloomberg story.à The Bloomberg story has been neatly divided into subheadings, while AFPââ¬â¢s story has no subheadings but incorporated all relevant details into a comprehensive news.
